Christmas Quilt 2004 - Page 3

To make the corner rectangle units, place a Color 4  2" square right sides together atop a Color 1 rectangle, with edges aligned.( I show mine staggered here just so you can see what two pieces of fabric I am using-yours should be aligned!) On the back of the top square lightly mark the diagonal. Sew ON this diagonal marking. Cut off the excess seam allowance. Press the remainder towards the center.  Make two rectangle units as shown top left, and two as shown bottom left. These should measure 2" x 3-1/2"...

To make the flying geese units do as you did in the step above, using Color 4 rectangle and Color 1 squares, repeating that process with another Color 1 square on the other end of the rectangle. Make four geese units in the same manner. These should measure 2" x 3-1/2"...

Next, sew a Color 4 2" square to a half square unit, pressing seam towards half square. Sew this to a corner rectangle unit. Make two units as shown at top left. Repeat this to make two more, reversed, units. These should each measure 3-1/2"...

Now sew a Color 4 quarter square triangle right sides together to a Color 1 2-5/8" square. Sew another Color 4 QST to the adjacent side of the square. Add trapezoids to the outer sides of the qsts. Sew Color 3 half square triangles to the outer edges of the trapezoids. Make four units like this. These should measure 3-1/2" x 6-1/2"...

Then make the block's center unit by joining Color 3  2" squares, Flying Geese units, and the Color 4  3-1/2" square. Lay all these pieces out as shown at far left. Sew into three horizontal rows, pressing top and bottom row seams to the outside, and the middle row seam to the center. Join the three rows. This should measure 6-1/2" square...on to Page 4!
