** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by cutting the Color 1  2-1/2" x 15" strip into six 2-1/2" squares...

Cut the Color 1  4-7/8" x 9-3/4" strip into two 4-7/8" squares. Stack and cut these once on the diagonal to make four half square triangles...

Cut the Color 2  9" square into four 4-1/2" squares...

Cut the Color 3  2-7/8" x 11-1/2" strip into four 2-7/8" squares. Stack these and cut them once on the diagonal to make eight half square triangles...

Using a scant 1/4" seam, sew Color 3 half square triangles to the Color 1 squares on the left and top, as shown at top left. Press seams towards triangles. Add a Color 1 half square triangles, pressing seam towards large triangle. Square this unit off to measure 4-1/2" if needed. make four units like this...

Now place Color 1 squares right sides together against opposing corners of the Color 3  4-1/2" square, with outside edges aligned. (I show them staggered here; yours shouldn't be) On the back of the small squares draw in the diagonals and sew ON these drawn lines. Cut off the excess seam allowance, pressing remainder towards the darker sides. Trim this unit to measure  4-1/2"...on to Page 2!
