A Fat Quarter of each Fabric should be ample!

The first thing that I would recommend that you do, is go to the Practice Paper Piecing Page.  When you feel comfy with paper piecing, come on back and try a Captain of His Ship Block! You will need to print out 2 copies of the template A page, and 1 of B per block you want to make on very lightweight paper. You also need 1 yellow and 1 black 2-7/8" x 5-3/4" strip.

Speed piece the corner half squares, by stacking the blk. and yel. 2-7/8" x 5-3/4" strips right sides together with all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip mark the 2-7/8" square line and the diagonals as shown at left. Sew a scant 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square line. Cut apart on the marked diagonals and on the square line. This will give you 4 half squares. Press seam allowances to dark side. Trim these back to measure 2-1/2" if needed.

Complete paper piecing. Sew 2 of these half squares to ends of 2  paper pieced side units. Sew other 2 side units to sides of ship. Add top and bottom units to finish the block!

Here are nine Captain of His Ship blocks, with triple borders and cornerstones!
