This makes a 10" block and is paper pieced , orig. from the early 1930's!

The first thing that I would recommend that you do, is go to the Practice Paper Piecing Page.  When you feel comfy with paper piecing, come on back and try a Broken Heart Block! You will need to print out two copies of the template page per block you want to make on very lightweight paper. You will also need one red and one yellow half square triangle cut from  2-7/8" squares. Fat Quarters should be plenty!

First sew together the two half square triangles using a scant 1/4" seam. Press seam to darker side, and trim this back to 2-1/2" if needed. Now paper piece all your units. Sew the block together as shown at near right...

Here are sixteen Broken Heart Blocks with a  pieced border!
