** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Cut the Color 1  3-1/2" x 16" strip into one 3-1/2" x 9-1/2" rectangle and one 3-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangle...

Cut the Color 4  3-1/2" x 7" strip into two 3-1/2" squares...

Now sew the Color 2 and Color 3  3-1/2" x 7" strips right sides together along one long edge using a scant 1/4" seam. Press seam to darker side. Cut this at the 3-1/2" point to make two pieced units. Each one should measure 3-1/2" x 6-1/2"...

Flip one of the units you just made and line up dark with light, and light with dark. Place these right sides together with the center seams nested together. Stitch in a scant 1/4" seam. Press seam to one side. This Four Patch unit should measure 6-1/2" square...

To make one side unit, place a Color 4 square right sides together atop the right end of a Color 1 short rectangle with outer edges aligned. On the back of the top square lightly mark the diagonal. Sew on this diagonal marking. Cut off the excess seam allowance. Press the remainder towards the center. This should measure 3-1/2" x 6-1/2"...on to Page 2!
